Liposuction
Liposuction, also known as liposculpture, is a popular surgical procedure used to remove unwanted fat deposits from specific areas of the body. It is often sought after by people struggling to get rid of localized fat that does not respond to diet and exercise.
The liposuction procedure involves inserting thin cannulas through small incisions in the skin. These cannulas are used to break down and suction excess fat, thus sculpting the treated areas to achieve a more desired and proportionate body shape.
There are several areas of the body where liposuction is commonly performed, including the abdomen, thighs, hips, buttocks, arms, back, and chin. The technique can be adapted to meet the specific needs of each patient, being performed alone or in combination with other surgical procedures, such as abdominoplasty or thigh lifts.
Before undergoing liposuction, patients usually undergo a detailed consultation with a qualified plastic surgeon. During this consultation, aesthetic goals, areas to be treated, appropriate surgical techniques and potential risks and complications associated with the procedure are discussed. The surgeon also evaluates the patient's overall health to ensure they are a suitable candidate for surgery.
During liposuction surgery, the patient usually receives local or general anesthesia, depending on the extent of the procedure and the preferences of the patient and surgeon. Small incisions are made in the areas to be treated, and a liquid solution called tumescent solution, which contains anesthetic and epinephrine, is injected to help break down the fat and minimize bleeding.
Liposuction cannulas are then inserted into the incisions and gently moved through the fatty tissue to loosen the fat, which is then suctioned out using a suction system connected to the cannula. The surgeon works carefully to sculpt the treated areas according to the previously established surgical plan.
After liposuction is complete, compression dressings are applied to the incisions and, in some cases, it may be necessary to use a compression garment to help reduce swelling and promote healing. The recovery period varies from person to person, but generally involves some temporary discomfort and swelling, which is managed with pain relievers and post-operative care measures.
The results of liposuction are usually visible as soon as the swelling subsides, revealing a more sculpted and contoured silhouette. However, it is important to emphasize that liposuction is not a substitute for a healthy lifestyle, including a balanced diet and regular exercise. To maintain long-term results, patients must adopt healthy habits and maintain a stable weight after the procedure.
As with any surgery, there are potential risks associated with liposuction, including complications such as bleeding, infection, skin irregularities, changes in sensitivity, and poor contouring. Therefore, it is crucial that patients choose an experienced plastic surgeon certified by the Brazilian Society of Plastic Surgery and follow all pre- and post-operative guidelines carefully to ensure the best results and minimize risks.
