Blepharoplasty

Blepharoplasty is a surgical procedure performed on the eyelids to correct aesthetic and functional problems, such as excess skin, pockets of fat and sagging around the eyes. It is a common intervention sought by people who want to rejuvenate the eye area, improve the appearance of the upper and lower eyelids and reduce signs of aging.

There are two main types of blepharoplasty:

Blepharoplasty of the upper eyelids:

During this procedure, the plastic surgeon makes incisions along the natural folds of the upper eyelids. Excess skin, muscle and fat are removed or repositioned as needed to correct ptosis (drooping) of the upper eyelids and restore a more youthful, alert appearance around the eyes. These incisions are carefully closed with fine sutures to minimize visible scars.

Blepharoplasty of the lower eyelids:

In lower eyelid blepharoplasty, the surgeon makes incisions below the lash lines or within the conjunctiva (transconjunctival) to remove or redistribute excess skin, muscle and fat from the lower eyelids. This helps reduce fat pockets, wrinkles and sagging, resulting in a more rejuvenated and rested appearance around the eyes. As with upper eyelid blepharoplasty, the incisions are closed with fine sutures to minimize visible scars.

Blepharoplasty can be performed alone or combined with other facial rejuvenation procedures, such as a facelift, brow lift, or soft tissue fillers, for more comprehensive results.

Recovery from blepharoplasty varies from person to person, but generally involves some temporary swelling and bruising around the eyes, which tends to subside over the first few weeks after surgery. Patients are instructed to avoid vigorous activity and to use cold compresses to help reduce swelling and discomfort. Most patients can resume normal activities within one to two weeks after surgery, although it may take a few months for the final results to be fully visible.

The results of blepharoplasty can be remarkable, providing a more rejuvenated and rested appearance around the eyes, with a significant improvement in self-confidence and self-esteem. However, it is important to emphasize that blepharoplasty is a surgery and involves risks, such as infection, bleeding, changes in sensitivity and unsatisfactory healing. Therefore, it is essential that patients choose an experienced plastic surgeon certified by the Brazilian Society of Plastic Surgery and follow all pre- and post-operative guidelines carefully to ensure the best results and minimize risks.
